Family business: talent returns to the strategic agenda
Family businesses are facing one of the most decisive challenges for their continuity: how to attract, develop and retain the talent that will secure their future. In a context of accelerated change, generational transition and evolving professional expectations, talent moves from an operational concern to a top-level strategic priority. This was the focus of a recent afterwork discussion organised with TFAB - The Family Advisory Board at CasaClub Madrid, creating an open and much-needed space to reflect on the role of talent in the long-term sustainability of family-owned companies.Talent, governance and long-term visionThe conversation brought together Manuel Bermejo Sánchez, President of TFAB, and Miguel Ángel Navarro Barquín, CEO of Catenon, who addressed talent challenges from a realistic, strategic and business-driven perspective. There was clear consensus around the unique strengths of family businesses: purpose, strong values, a distinct identity and a tangible impact on their communities. However, to turn these attributes into a sustainable competitive advantage, they must be supported by robust governance structures, professionalisation and a strong commitment to talent development.Independent boards and openness to changeOne of the key conclusions was the importance of independent boards in providing external insight, objectivity and balance in decision-making. This openness is essential to avoid internal inertia and enable the evolution of leadership and management models.Equally important is creating space on the strategic agenda for talent and innovation, recognising that innovation is ultimately driven by people with the right skills, mindset and room to contribute.Continuous learning and collaboration to attract new generationsThe discussion also highlighted the role of continuous learning and collaboration in attracting younger generations. Today’s talent seeks ongoing development, collaborative environments and meaningful projects, beyond the traditional stability often associated with family businesses.Family companies that manage to evolve without losing their essence are those that successfully translate their values into tangible leadership practices, professional development and organisational culture.Authenticity as a competitive advantageA recurring theme throughout the conversation was authenticity. Talent is drawn to authentic organisations, and few are as genuinely authentic as family businesses. The challenge lies in making that authenticity visible, structured and aligned with modern talent expectations. At Catenon, this means supporting family businesses in attracting and developing the talent that ensures their long-term continuity, balance and growth.A strategic discussion increasingly present in family business boardrooms focused on long-term sustainability.#Empresa #Familiar #Talento
