Controller (Accounting Specialist)

Our client, leading multinational corporation is seeking for a Portuguese and english speaker Controller to join the Finance team for a temporary contract.

The local Controller is responsible for the overall oversight of accounting activities, financial reporting, statutory reporting and internal control environment for the corresponding regions (mainly Portugal, but also Middle East and Africa) as needed). While transactional accounting activities are performed by a shared service centre, the Controller is to work closely with the shared service centre to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the financial statements and adherence to accounting policies. The Controller is to work with the local FP&A team in order to ensure that revenues and costs are projected properly in accordance with US GAAP in budget and estimate submissions. The Controller is to be responsible for review of the P&L and balance sheet in order to ensure accuracy and completeness of the financials.

The local Controller is to work closely with the local regions the Shared Services in order to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the financial statements and adherence to accounting policies.


  • - Oversee monthly close activities performed by the shared Service Center, instruct on any judgmental or non-recurring entries to be made and approve certain journals
  • - Ensure financial reporting is timely, accurate, reliable and supported by qualitative analysis
  • - Ensure all significant transactions are reviewed for appropriate accounting treatment
  • - Ensure consistency in accounting and adherence to US GAAP
  • - Review and approve accounting adjustments such as credit memos, write-offs, disposals
  • - Review monthly P&L with the FP&A team to ensure completeness and accuracy and instruct the Shared Service Centre team on any corrections or adjustments to be made
  • - Review balance sheet variance analyses, rollforward schedules and quarterly/supplemental schedules prepared by the Shared Service Centre
  • - Perform Balance Sheet accounts reconciliations and review account reconciliations prepared by the Shared Service Centre
  • - Review and reconcile monthly payroll
  • - Track barter deals
  • - Manage the statutory reporting process including engaging with external auditors, obtaining supporting documentation from the Shared Service Centre, preparing statutory adjustments and preparing annual reports
  • - Manage relationship with external auditors and ensure requirements are met
  • - Preparation and filing of other statutory reports
  • - Review and follow-up on GL, Intercompany and Programming metrics provided by the Shared Service Centre
  • - Follow-up on Open POs and GR/IR items and reconciliations as requested through the monthly review process
  • - Maintain relationship with the Shared Service Centre and ensure that they preserve the integrity of financial records and process transactions accurately and in accordance with local statutory and tax requirements
  • - Work to ensure integrity and accuracy of financial statements and compliance with company accounting policies and procedures, statutes, regulations and US GAAP/ Sarbanes Oxley (SOX)
  • - Support tax processing (including VAT and WHT) and review filings prepared by the Shared Service Centre
  • - Monitoring of transfer pricing files in accordance with local legislation and in collaboration with the Group Tax Team
  • - Assistance to the Group for any tax request
  • - Oversee and own execution of local controls and support compliance needs
  • - Commitment to standardization and optimization of processes; drive process improvements within the region and continually look to better processes performed at the Global Business Services level


  •  University degree in Business, Finance or Accounting – accounting certification preferred
  •  Between 6 and 8 years of relevant accounting work experience
  •  Exceptional financial, accounting and reporting skills
  •  Auditing experience preferred
  •  Solid US GAAP, IFRS and Portuguese GAAP experience required,
  •  SAP experience
  •  Strong experience in working with Finance Shared Services team & environment is a plus
  •  Languages: Proficient in Portuguese and English (oral and written); other additional language skills are a plus (especially Italian)
  •  Strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to make decisions and influence others
  •  Excellent problem analysis and solving skills in a complex and fast-moving environment
  •  Strong analytical skills, sound business judgment, ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously and to meet strict deadlines
